During AMD's Analyst Day last week, we could not help but poke our nose into an opened door (after we turned the handle a bit) and listen in on the product meetings about upcoming AMD platforms and their naming. Names have been blanked out to protect the nearly innocent.
AMD Chief Marketing Person (CMP): OK, time to name our future 2010 and beyond platforms. Lets see, gaming halo products first, those would be snakes. What should we follow Python with?
AMD Marketeer 1: How about Cobra dan Boa?
CMP: Sure, Cobra for 2010, Boa 2011, and how about Anaconda for 2012?
AMD Marketeer 1: Great! Genius!
CMP: And now on to laptops and birds of prey. I see a vision, Falcons!
AMD Marketeer 2: And lets throw in Osprey after that, and on top of it Golden Eagle.
CMP: Yup, great. Now on to mainstream desktop, what follows Copperhead? Poisonous snakes? Less poisonous snakes than the gaming line?
AMD Marketeer 3: We could start with Adder for 2010.
CMP: Yeah, sounds good. Wait, wasn't you who dinged the door of my Cayenne back in March?
AMD Marketeer 3: Ummm, errrr, yeah. Really sorry about that. It was an accident.
CMP: No matter, back to work, poisonous snakes. Where were we, Adder and... no, I have another vision. Marketeer 3, you get Leech, Preparation H and Pansy. Good luck guys, go out there and sell millions.
Now you know how it is done, all scientific and methodological like. It is good to see that marketing is just as sensible as chip design.
